Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to Questions Submitted by TGDE Users

1. I have the Thomas Guide on CD-Rom version 4.05 or earlier. What is new in the current Version of the Thomas Guide Digital Edition?
Lots. Check here for a complete list of features.
2 Do you have a Macintosh version of the Thomas Guide DE?
No, there are no plans to create a Macintosh version.
3. Does current version of Thomas Guide Digital Edition print addresses and point information at the bottom of the map page as with Version 1.0?
Yes, with version 4.10 or later.
4. Are the maps based on magnetic north projection or true north?
True north.  A map projection is a formula by which streets and points on the surface of the earth are located on a map.  The cartographers at Thomas Bros. Maps have developed a custom set of projections that are used for all Thomas Bros. publications.  A major advantage of these projections is that they work continuously with our maps across the United States.

All projections distort the direction and shape of lines and areas on the curved surface of the earth by displaying the lines and areas as flat.  Occasionally the direction of the roads is slightly tilted.  This is noticeable when the roads are straight and are laid out along north-south and east-west lines.   True north will be slightly different from straight up on the page.

5. I receive an error message stating that ISSET_SE caused a general protection fault in module <filename> at <address> where <filename> is the name of the program file you are trying to run, and <address> is the memory address at which the error occurs.  What causes this?
This occurs if any of the following conditions exist:

Norton AntiVirus Live Update and Norton AutoProtect are enabled.
Microsoft Intellipoint is installed on your computer, and the Point32 program is currently running.
Microsoft Intellipoint or microsoft IntelliMouse Trackball software is installed on your computer, and the
MSWheel program is currently running.

Solution:

Follow the install procedures described on http://www.thomas.com/prod/tgde/install.html

6. What are the minimum system requirements to run the Thomas Guide Digital Edition?
Please check the current requirements http://www.thomas.com/prod/tgde/sys_req.html.
7. Does the CD have to be in the CD-ROM drive to run?
Yes. The TGDE does not need to be in the CD-ROM drive in order to operate, although the TGDE must be in the drive when loading the program and switching data sets.

If your company has a need to operate TGDE without the CD-Rom, please contact Thomas Bros. Maps and ask for the Business Development Group. They will be able to discuss licensing costs and issues with you.

8. Can TGDE be setup to operate on a network?
Typcially, no. The Thomas Guide Digital Edition is designed as a desktop mapping application only.

However, setting up TGDE on a network can be done, but requires a custom installation. Please contact Thomas Bros. Maps and ask for the Business Development Group. They will be able to discuss licensing costs and other Network installation issues with you.

9. Although I have the required amount of printer memory, when attempting to print from the Clark County TGDE only the marker labels appear on the page.  What is causing this?
An earlier version of the TGDE is installed. You may need to upgrade using the latest Service Pack  This is a free download and will update you to the latest version.
10. When switching between data sets the map display does not appear.  Why does this happen and how do I correct this?
There was a problem with reading the user's previous coordinates from the registry for some datasets. You may need to upgrade using the latest Service Pack  This is a free download and will update version 4.0 or later.
11. When attempting to install the TGDE 2000 on NT systems an error occurs stating:  "An error occurred during the move data process:  -115; Component: Windows System files; File Group:  Windows system non self-register; File: \WINNTS\SYSTEM 32\CTL3D32.DLL".  How do I correct this?
This message occurs when the CTL3D32.dll on a Windows system is an older version than the one that the TGDE requires.  The installation program checks for the existence, but not the version of the file.  If your version of CTL3D32.dll is newer than the version required, the problem doesn't occur.  If your version is older, it does.

Solution:  Back up the CTL3D32.dll file by renaming it to something else, such as "CTL3D32_Backup.dll",  just in case something goes wrong.  Only one CTL3D32.dll file should be installed on the system.  Delete the CTL3D32.dll file from the  \WINDOWS\SYSTEM AND \WINNTS\SYSTEM 32 directories and reinstall the TGDE.

12. TGDE Crashes or locks up when it loads.
The cause of these errors is most likely a problem with your video card or video driver. TGDE places relatively large demands on the video resources and some card/driver combinations are not able to handle it. Updating your video driver can usually resolve the problem:

a. Uninstall Thomas Guide DE

b. Identify the video card your computer uses and record this information.

c. Go to your computer manufacturer's website. Find the driver download section.

d. Download the updated video driver for your computer/video card combination.

e. Follow their install instructions for updating the video driver.

f. Reinstall Thomas Guide DE

13. After installing the TGDE, when attempting to run the program it shows the splash screen and freezes.  When moving the splash screen, I see an error message stating that "An unsupported operation has been attempted".  Upon closing the message, another dialog occurs stating "Failed to create empty document".  What should I do?
First uninstall and reinstall TGDE using the procedures here. If that does not work contact Thomas Bros. Technical Support at tgde@thomas.com.
14. Does the current Edition offer cross street lookups?
Yes, this is available in edition 4.10 and later.
15. Are there any known hardware conflicts with the TGDE?  If so, what are they?
Yes, we have found a few cases where the video display adapter cannot properly render the Thomas Guide DE maps.

a. Toshiba models 780,660,440-490 have Neomagic display adapters and do not work with Thomas Guide DE. Updating to the newest available video drivers does not help. There is no known workaround.

b. Toshiba models later than 780(any make) have Trident video cards, and can usually be made to work with Thomas Guide DE. You must change the video driver (the program that runs the video card) to Trident Super VGA. If you are not sure how to do this, Please contact Technical Support at tgde@thomas.com.

c. All tested versions of Silicon Integrated Systems and Neomagic display adapters fail to work with Thomas Guide DE. Updating to the most recent drivers does not help. There is no known workaround.

To find out what type of display adapter your computer has, click on Start Programs, then Settings, then Control Panel. Select Display. Select the Settings tab, then Advanced. The video driver model should be listed (those steps may vary slightly depending on your operating system).

16. How do I rename a User Point?
The query window provides an interface to change point information.
                        a.    Verify that the "query window" is displayed by selecting "Query Bar" from the "View" menu.
                        b.    With the query/select tool, click on the point location.
                        c.    Double-click in the "name" field of the query window.
                        d.    Highlight over the existing text.
                        e.    Type in desired name and hit "Enter".
17. Do I have to have internet access to run the program?
No.  Although the TGDE relies on Internet Explorer components in order to run, and Internet Explorer must be installed, internet access is not required in order to make use of the basic functions of the Thomas Guide Digital Edition.
18. How do I recall downloaded map layers once I've downloaded them?
From the "File" menu, select "Open", double-click "cache" where you will find your downloaded map layer files.  Just double-click the desired file
19. My version will only allow me to save 25 points.  How can I save more?
Previous versions, 4.03 and under, allowed for 25 point storage.  This limit was removed in version 4.04. Upgrade to the current version.
20. How can I print a larger area with all street detail.
What you see in the map window on the screen is always what will print. As you zoom out the street detail is removed. Elimination of street detail at higher zoom levels is a neccessary design of the program due to performance issues.
21. Do previous Geofinder users recieve an upgrade discount for the ToolBox?
Some GeoFinder users may be eligible for a credit toward the ToolBox California Edition. Contact us and ask for the Retail Store.
22. What is the "ToolBox" product and what capabilities will it provide?
Check here for a full list of its features.
23 Why is it necessary for Thomas Guide DE to install Internet Explorer?
The Thomas Guide DE requires some Internet Explorer components. In order to be certain that they are all present and to meet Microsoft's redistribution requirements, the full Internet Explorer must be installed. This is only an issue for Windows 95 users, or for those determined individuals who have uninstalled Internet Explorer from their computer.
24. I have the Portland Metro Area or Puget Sound 2000 Edition of the TGDE.  The program will not accept my serial number or I have not been provided with a yellow sticker containing the serial number on the back of the CD-ROM's jewel case. What is wrong?
The Portland and Puget Sound TGDE's each had a shipment was sent out where there were no labels applied to the jewel cases and combo packs had the wrong serial number applied to the CD sleeve. Valid serial numbers can be obtained by contacting Technical Support at tgde@thomas.com.
25. Will the ToolBox work with my GPS unit?
The ToolBox GPS feature is designed to work with the Rand McNally brand GPS unit. In addition it should work with any GPS unit that communicates with the NMEA standard and can be connected to your computer's serial port. However, we cannot guarantee it will work with your particular GPS unit even if the unit meets those requirements.
26. In ToolBox, when I e-mail a map why don't my User Points and/or Geocoded Points get sent along with the map?
In order to send the User Points or Geocoded points with your map, the User Points database or the Geocoded Points database would have to be attached to the e-mail. We decided most users would not want their personal and/or business database e-mailed. To work around this, add points you want to send in your e-mail map as Markers.
27. When I send an e-mail map, the recipient cannot open it even though they have Thomas Guide DE. What's wrong?
The recipient must have Thomas Guide DE version 4.10 or later in order to open an e-mail map. They should upgrade to the latest version using the Service Pack on our website.
28. In ToolBox, how to I unselect a drawing (get rid of the black selection box around it)?
Hit the F2 key. This feature made it into the program too late to include in the ToolBox 4.10 Help file.
29. I installed ToolBox, but I don't see any of the ToolBox features. What's wrong?
You will see this if you installed the ToolBox on a more recent version of Thomas Guide DE. You will need to download and install the Service Pack from our website. In the above case, it would be best to uninstall TGDE completely, then perform the install starting with the TGDE Viewer, then ToolBox, and finally the Service Pack (If you have one of the statewide editions, the ToolBox is combined with the Viewer). The Service Packs are always the most recent version of the program, and will upgrade both TGDE Viewer and the ToolBox.
30. I have Office 2000 installed on a Windows 2000 PC, and every time I insert the TGDE CD-Rom my computer tries to install it again, even if I already have it installed.
This was fixed in the latest TGDE Service Pack. Download it here
31. I can't downoad your Service Pack because my ISP keeps timing out. Or, I download it and it is corrupted
There are a number of possible reasons. Not every ISP (Internet Service Provider) allows transmission of large files (the service packs are around 10 - 30 Mb depending on the version number). There is no way around this other than getting a new ISP. It may also be caused by security settings on your local network that prevent the download.

Thousands of users have downloaded our Service Packs successfully. If your download was damaged in transition, first try to download it again. If that fails, contact your ISP or Network Administrator to find out what the problem might be.

32. In the "Address Lookup Can't Find Your Street Name" form, I am unable to use the Limit to County, City, or ZIP feature. It does not display a list of the streets.
This is a known problem with some 2001 editions, and there is no workaround for it. The problem will be fixed in the 2002 Edition the product.
33. When opening another dataset, the Dataset name appears as "Full Name not found in Registry".
This can be fixed by a registry key for the dataset name. At the desktop, select Run from the Start menu. Type in "regedit". Go to the key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Thomas Bros. Maps\Geofinder\Data\4.0. Click on the missing Dataset name (ex: SBV2002). Add a new key called "Full Name" and its value will be the name of the dataset as it appears on the cd case, for example "Santa Barbara, Ventura, 2002".
